7 min read Impactus Ventures

Explore the mapping of venture capital funds that invest in educational technology companies and can help you grow if you are fundraising or plan to soon.

Major educational technology companies such as Platzi, Crehana, Duolingo and Coderhouse, which today are a benchmark in the edtech startup ecosystem in Latin America, reached the top with the help of venture capital funds. The funding rounds they received accelerated their growth and became a key component of their development.

Venture capital funds have played a key role in the educational technology boom we have seen in Latin America over the last 10 years. The region became an attractive destination for investors with a special interest in edtech. To date, in the region, this sector has received more than US$1B in investment and has more than 1,500 educational technology companies, according to Holon IQ data.

In 2023 alone, edtech received around US$3 billion, while in the first half of 2024, investments totaled more than US$1 billion, according to Crunchbase data. Although the figures have decreased in recent years, edtech companies keep attracting venture capital investment and it is a sector with great opportunities in the market. Remember that there are still educational challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean that have not been fully addressed.

According to the Inter-American Development Bank, the 4 main educational problems in the region are:

  1. Dropout from secondary education: 35% of young people between 21 and 23 years old have not finished secondary school.
  2. Deficiency in learning foundational skills: 50% of 15-year-old students have low levels of learning in science and reading, while 75% are deficient in math.
  3. Most students do not have the basic cognitive and socio-emotional skills to succeed in life.
  4. Not everyone has access to quality education, especially in vulnerable areas.

Venture capital has turned its attention to educational startups that address these problems with innovation and technology. Entrepreneurs and educational technology play a fundamental role in transforming Latin America and the Caribbean, because of their ability to solve learning needs with more agility and simplicity. In addition, their innovative solutions tend to fill the educational gaps that governments are not addressing in their education models.

The segments and technology solutions that have been most attractive to investors and have grown the most, according to the 2024 Global Education Outlook report by Holon IQ, are:

  1. STEAM solutions from K-12 to the workforce.
  2. Solutions for digitizing processes in educational institutions and companies, from analytics to LMS, parent communication apps, education financing and full-service administrative environments.

In recent years we have seen that most educational technology startups have focused on developing solutions to complement and reinforce learning inside and outside schools, as well as developing skills at the early childhood, primary and secondary, higher education and workforce levels. However, there are still gaps in the market and in existing solutions that entrepreneurs can take advantage of with new technologies.

For entrepreneurs who already have solutions like these or plan to develop them and are looking for outside investment to grow, we mapped the venture capital funds that have invested in early-stage and growth-stage educational technology startups in Latin America, with investment tickets from US$50,000 in a pre-seed or seed round up to US$10 million in a Series B.

These venture capital firms have funded major startups such as Aprende Institute, Beereaders, Kinedu, Crack the Code and Crehana, among many others. Their investments focus mainly on Latin America and on startups with innovative technology-based solutions focused on childhood, youth and adulthood. Just as these companies grew with outside capital, your startup can also reach the next level of growth.

Before choosing investors, we suggest a thorough review of each fund’s investment thesis to identify those aligned with your product and vision. Remember that investors can decline your investment request, and not necessarily because your product is bad, but because it does not fit what each fund is looking for.
